Brothers – older Stephen and three years junior Bloom – have been con artists since they were kids. Stephen is the mastermind, for who the intricacy of the story used in the con is as important as the positive outcome of the swindle. Bloom is the main character of Stephen’s stories, the character he considers the anti-hero. As adults, they travel the world and never enlist the same people twice in their cons, except for their consistent sidekick, the mysterious and primarily silent Bang Bang, a Japanese woman who just appeared in their lives one day and who has a penchant for blowing things up. As Bloom hits his mid-thirties, he wants to quit the business as he is losing his own identity to that of the characters he portrays; he doesn’t know anymore what is real and what is make-believe. He moves into a delapidated flat, keeps in regular contact with an important-seeming man called Mr Fisher, has minders apparently keeping him under protection, and lives in increasing fear of his life. The plot seems to be connected to a growing satellite TV company. His son discovers that he also has a gun. The father reveals that once the mysterious job is over, they will be paid £2 million and emigrate to America. However, when he goes to a bar to collect the money from Mr Fisher, he doesn’t show up. The time is several centuries into the future. Man has been relegated to a minority species, “homo-sapiens” quickly being replaced by the clone race “homo-technis”. Even these scientifically designed carbon copies are being usurped by a new breed of genetically engineered individual known as “homo-superior.” In conjunction with an alien race known as the Nephilim, superior is strategizing to eradicate homo-sapiens all together, a galaxy wide bit of revenge as genocide on the part of these angry extraterrestrials. Hoping to save the genus, “breeders” have been developed, capable of carrying multiple children to term. It’s up to disgraced military man Derasi Vorde and his ragtag crew of spaceship stalwarts – including a freed slave pilot, the mechanic wife of a late friend, and a computer with psychological issues – to deliver this latest breeder to the off-world safety of a rebel base. After he disgraces himself in front of his Funkyzeit fan base, he is ruined in German speaking Europe. He decides that in his quest for worldwide fame, he will move to Los Angeles and reinvent himself. Accompanying him to the US is Lutz, his former assistant’s assistant. Lutz is the only person left in his circle that still believes in Brüno’s greatness. Brüno goes through one reinvention of himself after another, ultimately straying to areas far removed from his own self.
